Frontier Silicon brings Sirius Radio home
Frontier Silicon, the manufacturer of digital audio semiconductors and modules, has announced that it will be supporting the popular Sirius Internet Radio service on its Venice 6 multistandard receiver module. According to market research from Bridge Ratings, Sirius Radio is currently listened to by around six million US-based subscribers via satellite, mainly in their cars. The Sirius Internet Radio service gives subscribers access to numerous channels of music as well as talk, news, comedy and sport programming.

High-Definition Set-Top-Box Decoder with Integrated Demodulator
STMicroelectronics has announced today the availability of a new single-chip high-definition set-top box decoder combining both the demodulation and decoding functions on a single device. The STi7111, which has been designed to meet the requirements of major satellite operators worldwide, including DIRECTV, will allow OEMs to target the high-volume market for consumers moving to high-definition services. By including a network interface, ST has further ensured the STi7111 can be effectively used in a hybrid STB, where content is delivered by both a satellite and an IP network. Innovative power-saving techniques further benefit consumers by reducing the energy requirements for the final STB.

STMicroelectronics' 4 x 4mm Analog-Output Accelerometer Family
STMicroelectronics has announced a new solution extending its family of ultra-compact 'low-g' linear accelerometers with a three-axis analog-output sensor. Ideally suited for battery-powered and space-constrained portable devices, such as mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs or remote controls, the LIS344AL is a cost-sensitive MEMS solution in an ultra-compact square footprint operating with low power consumption.
Non-contact sensor
A test rig built at Centa Transmissions in Shipley is allowing the company to guarantee that the precision gearboxes it supplies to nuclear industry will never fail prematurely. Despite its critical role, the rig is essentially quite simple, in that a motor drives the test unit against a load created by one of Centa's own industrial disc brakes. The test runs initially for three hours at the full working load, and then is increased to 300 percent load for another hour.

Low-Cost Standard-Definition Set-Top Box Decoder Supporting Leading Security Standards and Multiple Codecs
STMicroelectronics has announced a new low-cost STB decoder chip – the STi5202 – intended for standard-definition (SD) terrestrial, cable, satellite and IP (Internet Protocol) TV applications, and for both retail and operator-supplied boxes. It shares the same architecture as ST's STi7109 single-chip H.264 high-definition (HD) decoder, highly successful in markets worldwide, and it is also software compatible.

Toshiba claims development technology for world’s smallest flash memory element in 10nm generation
Toshiba has announced that it has developed a new double tunneling layer technology applicable to future 10nm generation flash memories. This elemental technology opens the way for memory devices with densities of over 100 gigabits in the 10nm generation, which lies four generations ahead. The technology was announced at the IEDM (International Electron Devices Meeting) held at Washington D.C., U.S.A.
NI and Emona Instruments Announce New Plug-In Module for Teaching Telecommunications Concepts
National Instruments and Emona Instruments, a National Instruments Alliance Partner, are working together to help educators teach students analogue and digital communication fundamentals with the release of a new add-on telecommunications board, the Digital Analog Telecommunications EXperimenter (DATEx) for the NI Educational Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Suite (NI ELVIS). With DATEx and the NI ELVIS integrated design and prototyping platform, students now can visualise telecommunications concepts in a hands-on learning environment. DATEx also operates with the NI LabVIEW graphical development environment to give students more control for building telecommunications projects using the graphical system design and block diagram approach.
Arrow specialists complete Microsoft training
Following the recent signing of Arrow UK's distribution agreement with Microsoft, twenty four of the company's engineers and technical specialists in the UK have received intensive training on the sofware company's operating systems and development tools. The training is designed to equip Arrow's specialists with the skills they need to support customers in building embedded applications based around Microsoft Windows Embedded software including Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and Windows XP Embedded. This includes providing support for toolkits such as Platform Builder for Windows CE and Target Designer for Windows XP Embedded.

Tensilica Adds to Xtensa HiFi 2 Audio
Tensilica has announced that it has added the Dolby Digital Consumer Encoder (DDCE) and Dolby Digital Compatible Output (DDCO) 5.1-channel encoders to its audio codec library for the Xtensa HiFi 2 Audio Engine, one of the most popular commercial audio cores for system-on-chip (SOC) designs. Fanless & Wireless Nano-ITX barebone system
Advansus, a joint-venture company of ASUS and Advantech, has announced a tiny wireless Nano-ITX barebone system for any space-limited and frequent network access applications. The NTC100-LX800 accommodates one AMD Geode LX800 @0.9W Nano-ITX motherboard which is capable of running high-quality multimedia streams up to 500 MHz clock rate. The compact system measures 170 mm x 155mm x 42mm, which square size is smaller than a Mini-ITX form factor.
High Voltage Ideal Diode-OR Controller from Linear Technology
The LTC4357 is a single high voltage ideal diode-OR controller from Linear Technology that offers a simple low loss replacement to the Schottky OR-ing diodes in multiple, N+1 redundant, power supply applications and high availability systems. The LTC4357 controls an external N-channel MOSFET to perform the function of a low forward voltage diode. This provides a lower loss path compared to the Schottky diode that, in high power applications, not only provides a more efficient solution but preserves precious board area by eliminating the need for heat sinking. The LTC4357 controls the forward voltage drop across the MOSFET to ensure smooth switchover from one path to another without oscillation or reverse DC current.
Lightweight and cost-effective EMI shielding plastic for fuel-conscious aerospace applications
Chomerics has developed a lightweight, electrically conductive plastic for EMI shielding of high temperature avionics. PREMIER PEI-140 maintains high temperature tolerance, chemical resistance and UL 94V-0 flammability rating for a cost-effective electronics shielding solution up to 85dB in aerospace applications. PEI-140 complies with avionics smoke density requirements in the event of an on-board fire.
Bi-directional flow sensors available now from TTI
TTI, Inc. has introduced Omron's new D6F-P MEMS-based D6F-P air flow sensor, suitable for flow rate monitoring and dumper control in HVAC/VAV (Variable Air Volume) applications. The D6F-P delivers uni- or bi-directional sensing with amplified output in a highly compact package. A key feature is its integrated, patent pending dust segregation system (DSS) which separates up to 99.5% (simulation test result) of dry air borne particulates from contaminated air helping to maintain performance characteristics of the sensor over its lifetime. The DSS is bi-directional, protecting against particulates whatever the direction of flow.
Keithley Joins WiMAX Forum
Keithley Instruments has become a member of the WiMAX Forum. The WiMAX Forum is an industry-led, non-profit organization responsible for promoting and certifying interoperable WiMAX products. WiMAX technology enables wireless high-speed Internet access for laptops and other mobile devices over much longer distances than current wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi.
TI Expands High-Speed Equalizer Family with Industry’s Lowest Jitter, Multi-Rate 11.3-Gbps Equalizer
Texas Instruments has introduced a flexible high-speed equalizer to extend the reach of printed circuit board signal channels, such as backplanes or active copper cables. With multi-rate operation up to 11.3 Gbps, the new equalizer supports all 10G/8G interface standards. The device's two-wire serial interface, pin control and PC-based graphical user interface (GUI) enable very quick prototyping, which significantly reduces the development cycle for high-performance computers, storage subsystems, telecommunications equipment and automatic test equipment (ATE).

ST’s Tiziano Iterative Channel Spans Mobile, Desktop and Enterprise Application Segments
STMicroelectronics is sampling its first 65nm iterative read channel for the low-power mobile segment of Hard Disk Drives (HDD). ST's iterative channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain is a key enabler for sustaining the industry's aggressive 40% compound annual growth rate in storage capacity. As well, even with the increased complexity of iterative technology ST has decreased power by greater than 25%, vital in mobile HDD applications.

IDT has introduced three high definition PC audio codecs. The high fidelity audio codecs are designed to help bring home-entertainment-level audio fidelity to next generation desktop and high-end notebook systems, whilst supporting mobile user capabilities such as advanced processing for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). NEC and NEC Electronics Develop Microcomputer and Operating System Platform for Next-generation Automotive Information Systems
NEC Corporation and NEC Electronics Corporation have completed development of prototypes for a system LSI chip and operating systems that will serve as the platform for next-generation automotive information systems. The system LSI chip and OS were developed in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corp., Aishin AW Co., Ltd., and Denso Corp., and capitalizes on synergies between NEC's software expertise and NEC Electronics' device technologies. NEC will continue to collaborate with these three companies to implement the platform in Toyota vehicles equipped with multimedia information systems from 2010 onward. Furthermore, the NEC Group will encourage other automotive manufacturers and IT companies to adopt the platform with the goal of establishing the industry standard for automotive information systems.

Analog Devices' DDS Technology Now Available for Low-Power, Portable Electronics
Analog Devices is expanding how it applies its direct digital synthesis technology into battery-powered industrial, communications and defence electronics applications with the introduction of a complete low-power, low-cost Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) specifically designed for wireless, handheld equipment. Unlike other approaches used to synthesize a digitally controlled frequency, the AD9913 is said to be first DDS device to deliver a 250-MHz clock rate while consuming just 50 mW of power. At less than $5 in volume quantities and available in a compact chip-scale package, the new IC is suited for portable barcode scanners, radar detectors, remote radio controls and other products that require a cost-effective combination of performance and low-power operation.
FTDI to introduce embedded USB host controller evaluation board at Embedded World 2008
At the 2008 Embedded World event, Future Technology Devices International Limited (FTDI) will unveil a new evaluation board V-Eval-1 for its VNC1L USB host controller IC. The board will provide a convenient and stable development environment in which to prototype Vinculum-based USB host controller designs and comes complete with onboard VNC1L programmer, 5v universal PSU and programming / debug utility software . In addition, FTDI will also present its full line-up of legacy USB to RS232 / RS422 converter ICs, reference designs and USB modules.
830nm Laser Diodes from Photonics Products
Photonic Products, the UK optoelectronics device manufacturer and laser diode specialist, has announced the introduction of two new, high power, infrared wavelength GaAlaS laser diodes from Opnext, Inc. Arrow Helps Develop Cholesterol Exercise Monitor
Arrow Northern Europe has played a key role in helping fitness technology specialist Newtest develop and manufacture a new device that monitors physical activity designed to lower 'bad' cholesterol levels. Recent studies have shown that appropriate aerobic physical activity has a key role to play in the reduction of LDL (or 'bad') cholesterol levels. Launched this month, the Newtest Cholesterol Exercise Monitor tracks and records a user's physical activities and provides feedback on how well those activities are matched to cholesterol reduction. This feedback can then be used to motivate the user and to refine and manage an appropriate exercise regime.

Murata pattern recognition sensors for ATMs etc
Murata has released four new products in its BS05 series of magnetic pattern recognition sensors. The BS05M1HFAL, BS05M1KFCA, BS05M1KFFA and BS05M1KFBB magneto-resistive sensors are designed for ATMs, banknote counters, detectors and other validator applications. The devices are suitable for detection of magnetic thread or magnetic ink, and enable simple and quick mounting. These parts retain around 70% of their output voltage at a 0.1mm gap between sensor and substrate, compared to just 4% for typical coil head sensors. Along with their stable frequency characteristic, which is independent of the scanning speed, this makes them suitable for high-speed processing devices that demand superior accuracy.
