Kontron's flat panel division has expanded its aFLAT series with the CRTtoLCD-8 flat panel controller. The Kontron CRTtoLCD-8 is the first product to have a wide range power supply (12 - 24 volt) and is specially designed to support industrial applications. Custom TFT display service provides application specific modules in low volumes
Anders Electronics has launched a custom engineering service that it says makes the display specialist the first company to offer semi-custom TFT modules for low volume applications. The new custom TFT engineering service will see Anders design and develop TFT modules that are optimised to target applications in terms of performance, functionality, optical characteristics, electrical and mechanical design. Furthermore, the combination of available technology and in-house engineering expertise allows Anders to develop semi-custom TFT displays for applications with low-volume production.

Varitronix launches ‘free-shape’ LCD service
LCD displays in polygonal or even circular shapes are available from industrial and automotive specialist Varitronix following investment in new precision glass scribing technology. Glass can now be cut up to 500mm square, generating polygons, circles or other more complex shapes including arcs. Robert Hill, Engineering Manager of Varitronix UK, commented, "We've always been able to provide customers with square or rectangular shape displays to their requirements – now we're no longer constrained by that, and can provide a more tailored LCD solution in nearly any shape possible. We're expecting a lot of interest." Minimum order quantities for free shape displays are similar to those for other custom LCD orders.

70in TFT display monitor for the out-of-home digital signage market
Global Display Solutions (GDS), in association with Distec GmbH, has announced the availability of a 70in TFT display monitor for the out-of-home (OOH) digital signage market. Using GDS's proprietary G-BOND optical bonding process, the display was recently built and showcased at the Viscom show at Düsseldorf in Germany by digital signage specialist Distec on whose behalf GDS developed this product. With a 70" HD resolution TFT display panel and AR coated laminated glass, this bonded product was manufactured at GDS's state–of-the-art bonding facility in Italy, and was exhibited at the exhibition prior to being shipped to America for field trials with a major advertising company.
LCD Module from NEC enables Control of Viewing Angle
NEC LCD Technologies has announced the development of color TFT LCD module that enables the viewing angle to be switched from wide to narrow in accordance with display contents, use and application of the LCD. The company has realized the new LCD module by its own unique value integrated TFT-LCD (VIT) technology, along with the addition of a new angle-switching control on the polarizer adjacent to the backlight system. The angle-switching control enables the light from the backlight system to be switched from a diffused pattern to a straight pattern by control signals, allowing easy switching of the viewing angle mode from that of wide to narrow.

NEC LCD Technologies has introduced two new 21.3inch [54 centimeters (cm)-diagonal] amorphous-silicon color thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules for medical applications such as the display of radiograms for the interpretation and diagnosis of illness. The NL160120AC27-20 is an ultra extended graphics array (UXGA) resolution TFT LCD module with brightness of 950 cd/m2, and the NL204153AC21-09 is a quad extended graphics array (QXGA) resolution TFT LCD module with brightness of 800 cd/m2. Both of the new color products achieve industry-leading luminance in each resolution category by NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary ultra-advanced, super-fine TFT (UA-SFT) technology and a new high-intensity, direct back-light system. Ideal for medical image diagnosis, the new modules also realize high picture performance with ultra-wide viewing angles, a high contrast ratio and high brightness uniformity.

NEC LCD Technologies has introduced two new 15-inch amorphous-silicon color thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display modules with extended graphics array resolution for industrial equipment such as factory automation controllers, measuring instruments, automatic teller machine terminals, kiosks and point-of-sale systems. The NL10276BC30-32 is a standard product with brightness of 250 candelas per square meter (cd/m2), while the NL10276BC30-33 has brightness of 350 cd/m2. Both modules conform to the Panel Standardization Working Group (PSWG) standards for 15-inch LCD modules.
Custom service helps users add colour to mono displays
Anders Electronics has further expanded its display design and engineering capabilities by launching a new service that allows the company to cost-effectively add a variety of colour options to standard monochrome displays. Believed to be the industry's first service of its type, Anders' M2C (mono-to-colour) custom offering is ideal for customers who want to employ colour to optimise the user machine relationship (UMR), but for whom migration to TFT LCDs is not a commercially viable option.
