Freescale and Mentor Graphics streamline embedded Android OS development

News Release from: freescale
28/10/2009

Freescale Semiconductor has introduced a hardware/software platform that helps systems designers and OEMs deploy the popular Android operating system on Freescale products based on Power Architecture technology.

Initially developed for wireless devices, the Android OS is increasingly used in embedded systems for applications such as multifunction printers, industrial equipment and touch screen interfaces for system controls. The rich feature set of the Android OS, together with the performance and integration of Freescale processors based on Power Architecture, can help systems designers meet demanding embedded requirements and create innovative products for industrial, networking, storage and media equipment markets. In addition, the highly flexible Android OS can be dynamically upgraded, thereby generating new revenue sources via networked services.

Freescale’s platform for the Android OS is a comprehensive hardware and software prototype solution based on the highly integrated, energy-efficient MPC8536E PowerQUICC® III processor and Mentor Graphics’ optimized implementation of the Android OS on Power Architecture technology. To speed the evaluation and prototyping of embedded applications for the Android OS, Freescale’s MPC8536-ADK solution is shipped preconfigured with an Android runtime and demonstration applications.

Freescale and Mentor Graphics will debut the MPC8536-ADK during a webcast on October 29 at 10:00 am – 11:00 am U.S. Central Time. The “Maximize Freescale PowerQUICC® and QorIQ™-based Designs using Mentor Graphics Android Solutions” web seminar will cover key topics including how to accelerate Android application development.
