Specialist power conversion distributor, PIV Technology, has introduced a tiny15Watt DC/DC converter.
The new RP15 – xxxx SA(W) series from Recom International offers ultra-miniature dimensions with very wide input voltage ranges. Until recently the industry standard size for a 15W DC/DC converter module was 1.6 x 2 (40.6 x 50.8mm) and is currently at 1 x 2 (25.4 x 50.8mm), the new RECOM standard is 1x1 (25.4 x 25.4mm) with a height of 0.39 (10mm).
In introducing this product PIV Technology’s Managing Director, Marc Hogg, stated “Recom have once again showed that they are at the forefront of DC/DC converter technology. By using the latest, state of the art materials and manufacturing methods they have not only produced an industry leading product in respect to size but have also significantly reduced the cost per watt”.
The series provides 2:1 input ranges of 9-18V, 18-36V and 36-75V in the SA variants and 4:1 input ranges of 9-36V and 18-75V in the SAW variants. These converters provide single outputs with standard voltages of 3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V. With efficiencies of up to 88%, this series works at the top end of the range for galvanically isolated DC/DC converters and as a result can guarantee trouble free operation at ambient temperatures exceeding 60°C, without the need for external cooling measures (power density exceeds 2.3W/cm3). Heat-sinks with corresponding mounting fixtures can be supplied to further increase the operating temperature range, should this be required. Simple external filtering and a metal case which provides 6 sided shielding ensures compliance to EMC standard EN-55022 Class B. The outputs can be trimmed over the range +/-10% of nominal output voltage and a remote ON/OFF pin enables external ON/OFF control or power sequencing.
The converter is fully encapsulated using the latest vacuum epoxy potting technology, ensuring that the product is both mechanically and environmentally robust.
